My Students

Do you remember the day you graduated? Graduation will be a momentous day in the lives of our eighth graders as they prepare to move from middle school to high school. They will be surrounded by their friends, families, teachers, and pomp and circumstance, but their day should be beautiful as well!

My colleagues and I are teachers, psychologists, and therapists at a specialized middle school for students with disabilities in a high poverty area of New York City.

Our students are 11 to 14-years-old, all with moderate to severe forms of autism and intellectual, emotional, and physical disabilities. They are wonderful, hard-working students who deserve an incredible graduation ceremony and celebration to celebrate their achievements as they graduate from middle school, watched by their proud families.

My Project

The auditorium that our students graduate in is slightly old and rundown, but for their graduation day, we will transform the space into a ceremony that they will remember forever. We want to provide them with festive graduation decorations, balloons, banners, flowers and streamers to mark the day, and lights that shine (almost as brightly as they will!). The younger students will help prepare the space for their friends, showing that our students are just as proud of their peers as their teachers are. These decorations will be used for future graduating classes as well! After the ceremony, we always celebrate this great occasion with their families at a wonderful graduation party with celebratory plates, napkins, and decorations. Furthermore, our graduates love to receive autograph books on their special day. We don't have a school yearbook, but an autograph book will allow them to have a lasting and tangible memory of their friends and their time in middle school.

Our students have worked so hard during their years in middle school to become successful learners, independent communicators, and most importantly, to discover who they are despite the difficulties that they struggle with everyday.

They have worked so hard to make it to their eighth grade graduation day and to move on to high school programs that will prepare them to be successful adults. A beautiful graduation will symbolize how proud we are of them and how proud they should be of themselves!
