Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are an incredibly diverse population. They come from many different cultures and backgrounds. I have many students that have a primary language other than English.
Many of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch; this allows them to have free or reduced cost breakfast as well, but they are not able to actually get to school early enough every day to utilize this opportunity.
They work incredibly hard and are very attentive. Most of my students are preparing for college, some directly for career, and a few for the military.
We are trying to create a community of tolerance, acceptance, and compassion within our school and our teams/clubs. The school is so incredibly diverse (religion, ethnicity, socio-economic, single parent homes, grandparent homes, etc.), with many immigrants.
We have many of these immigrant families as part of our robotics and STEM programs and we try to create a new family for them within our town. We work diligently with these young people, many of whom are English Language Learners [ELL] and have left all of their friends at home to come here to the U.S. to start a new life. I am a mentor for our robotics team.
My Project
My students are part of the FIRST Robotics Program and the two major parts of the program are building/competing with the robot and doing STEM outreach. This project is based upon the Escape Room Robots winning 3M Robotics project.
My students will use this robot to be part of our team outreach; they will also be using the electrical components from Mouser [red/black Anderson connectors and the two different contacts] to help build their competition robot.
These connectors are vital to changing speed controllers quickly and efficiently during competitions. By using these connectors, we do not have to solder all of the wires together and it makes everything modular.
