This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Distance learning is placing a bigger spotlight on ways I can improve my student's learning path for the next school year. Two of the biggest factors that I am witnessing at this time is inadequate digital devices and high-speed internet at home. Also, Parent and student disconnecting from the school and making no contact.
The gaps in basic technology include fear and lack of understanding of technology in the household.
Some students have basic technology such as, a phone, game system, or Amazon Fire (which isn't compatible). Many parents state that they don't understand and the students are not use to having no extra support by their side.
All of my students are from low-income families that still work essential jobs and don't have the luxury of staying home to help their students. Many students are with other family members that are unable to help or they are home alone, which has caused no contact from stress out parents.
My Project
When kids have access to a selection of paperback books and the freedom to self-select books, they develop their identities as readers. It allows them to think, not what to think.
With these colorful characters my students will be able to find themselves and see representation in books that expands beyond their own lives.
Many students will be able to connect and understand Miami Jackson's situations. Also, they may feel empathy from the characters in Dork Diaries. They need the freedom to choose whether they want to read books as windows, mirrors, roadmaps, or pure entertainment. Without that freedom, they might not read at all.
