Remember sitting in class thinking you knew the answer to the question the teacher was asking? Did you want to participate but afraid that if you were in fact wrong, the class might make fun of you? These are some of the issues my students deal with on a daily basis.
My students attend a turn-around high school in D.C.
and need personalized learning tools in a classroom setting. This past year, many of my students tested at a third grade reading level, and have since then made monumental improvements that exceed many of their own personal expectations. The majority of my students increased 3-4 years in reading scores in a single year. Many factors attribute to this success, however creating a personalized learning environment is definitely a key role. With donations to this project, all students will be able to participate in recording answers in class without the anxiety of feeling defeated if they are incorrect. Please help them feel successful in the future by donating to this project! Thank you!
In my classroom, students have practiced creating different levels of questions using Costa's level of Questioning (which has allowed them to truly analyze events and characters in literature), find context clues to vocabulary words, create working definitions of unfamiliar words, identify literary devices, and find quotes to support statements about a character or idea found in the text. With the use of personalized white boards, students can collaborate together to find answers and record answers in a risk-free environment. Because the student population at my school is below reading level, they have difficulty in fully lending themselves to the learning process. However, with personalized white boards, the anxiety of everyone knowing each student'ÃÂÃÂs weaknesses disappears and allows for a more organic learning experience. student's
My students are very aware of their setbacks in their academics.
As a result, it takes them a while to develop a level of comfort in stepping outside of their comfort zones to take a chance. Last year, my students made immense improvements over the course of the year, but I think with the use of these white boards, this year we will achieve even greater success!
