My Students

Covid-19 has placed a group of already disadvantaged students in an even worse situation. Last Spring due to the global pandemic, students at our High School were forced to transition to Virtual Learning. Many of our students are struggling to survive. They are living in lower socio-economic conditions, fighting in violent neighborhoods, and many are using unhealthy coping habits.

My 50 caseload students struggled last semester to turn in the majority of their virtual class assignments and several did not turn in any school work.

Being forced to sit and learn through a computer screen was not an easy transition. Many students struggled due to lack of motivation brought on by poor internet connections, not have a device nor the transportation to come to pick one up, and many simply were dealing with grief over missing their classmates.

This semester we are looking for ways to keep our students motivated and have created a monthly Student Survival Kit to address this problem.

My Project

This project is all about providing small but meaningful incentives to celebrate small successes along the way to meeting BIG goals. Students need to know their efforts, as miniscule as they may seem at the time, are reason enough to celebrate.

Tokens such as stickers, prizes like pencils and certificates when a milestone has been achieved can help pave the way for a student to develop the motivation and self-efficacy skills to build a solid foundation for overcoming academic and behavior setbacks.

With a caring adult leading the way, using intervention tools from evidence-based books students will be empowered to find their "why" and push through to meet their goals and become improved learners.
