In my classroom we have set aside a daily read-aloud time for students to listen to stories. After our energetic recess and lunch time, this is a quiet opportunity for my students to rest, calm their bodies and minds, and reset for afternoon lessons.
Our afternoon read-aloud time is the best part of the day and my students love listening to seasonal, themed stories for each month.
In November and December we read stories about leaves, pumpkins, plant life cycles, holidays celebrated around the world, snow, etc. My students really enjoy listening to and reading all kinds of books, but their favorites are the ones that I display each month that connect to holidays, people, events, and lessons that are specific to the month or season we are currently in. I value the time we spend listening, reading, and sharing books during our day and I hope it encourages my students to love reading, too!
