Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a school counselor, I proudly support 570 students K-8 in discovering themselves through social-emotional wellness. A large part of this population is Spanish speaking English learners. I am here to support all students, and they come to me for support with everyday life and guidance.
Many of my students lack a strong support system at home, therefore they need all of the resources they can get when they are in school.
Students come to me from different backgrounds asking for help with their problem-solving and educational decisions. My students represent a wide variety of socioeconomic levels, learning styles, and cultural backgrounds. Our urban school services 570 students, 76% of whom come from low-income families.
Last year as a counselor, I held individual, classroom guidance, and small group sessions. Examples of issues students had included family problems, grades, death, bullying, friendship problems, anxiety, career interests, social issues, behavior, and anger.
My Project
Our students have been working tirelessly toward their education. Starting with career and college exploration in the 6th grade and working up to their high school applications.
We are pushing students to achieve more in high school and preparing them for college #bettermakeroom.
This is the start of multi-generational change and transformation for our students, their families, and our communities. This is a celebration for our entire school and for future generations to come.
In our school system students have the opportunity to apply to high schools across the city. This makes the high school process very competitive. I want to celebrate that 100% of our students have qualified and applied to high schools all over the city.
We will have a high school signing day to reveal the students' choices for the next 4 years. These materials will help support students in making their Decision Day reveal. The students will use the Amazon Kindles to log onto their accounts and show their acceptance letters. They will have cookies and balloons to show underclassmen how much fun it is to succeed.
