Help me give my students opportunities to explore engineering practices and creativity with Legos and Keva blocks. Students will practice fine motor skills, patience, and the creative process in a fun, hands on way!

My Students

My students are deaf and hard of hearing elementary school children in 3rd through 6th grade. They are eager to learn but the obstacles presented by their hearing loss often frustrate them. They require a teacher who is patient and enthusiastic to motivate them to learn.

They learn primarily through American Sign Language and are learning English as their second language.

They learn through a variety of visual aids, technology, and written materials. They love to learn and look forward to each school day.

My Project

Students will be able to manipulate Keva building blocks and the materials inside the Lego creativity set to explore scientific concepts, including the engineering process and testing variables. They will make predictions and explore the results of their experimentation. This exercise will also allow them to use fine motor skills and patience, skills which are often not challenged enough with paper/pencil classroom work. Using these materials will provide them with tactile feedback and enable the use of different parts of their brain, which will create lasting connections necessary for further learning.
