My Students
I teach transitional kindergarten and kindergarten at a high poverty Title I School. My classroom makeup consists of English Language Learners, students with both academic and physical special needs, and several students that do not have many opportunities.
I love being able to create a caring and respectful classroom community for my students and offering opportunities that show them all of their possibilities!
My favorite part of teaching is building a community in my classroom and creating learning adventures that get my students excited about learning so that they cannot wait to come to school.
My Project
Financial literacy is an important life skill that begins in kindergarten! My students are learning foundational skills such as counting by ones, fives, and tens, beginning addition and subtraction, comparing numbers, the value of coins, understanding greater/less than, and how to count money.
Kindergartners learn best through play and by using engaging, hands-on materials.
I am requesting hands-on math centers and manipulatives that will help to reinforce number sense, which is an important part of financial literacy. The magnetic visual models chart will be used by me to teach and model problems with ten frames, a number line, and number bonds. My students will also be able to use this to solve problems (and it's big enough for everyone to see). The magnetic hundreds chart will be used daily to build number sense as students count by 1's, 5's, and 10's (a beginning skill needed for financial literacy). Students will use the number line slider boards, magnetic ten frames, and magnetic Rekenrek to count, add, subtract, and more. All of these skills are an important part of financial literacy.
Financial literacy is an important skill to introduce to young students. Practicing number sense in a fun and hands-on way will build a solid foundation for these students.
