My students need access to stories that engage and build them up. This collection of books, especially those from author Jason Reynolds, makes reading approachable for my struggling readers.
My students are some of the best teenagers you could ever meet. They come from a small town that doesn't have a lot of opportunities to expand their cultural understandings. Our classroom is where they are able to ask the tough questions and learn about cultures through multiple avenues.
When given the resources and chances to create and innovate, they take them and fly to the moon.
My students are creative, innovative, and eager to learn. They come in to class ready to begin whatever the agenda board holds for them.
My Project
Building a classroom library gives students access to books that most wouldn't find in their homes. I have requested this selection of books to help engage my students by placing meaningful, multicultural stories in their hands. I've borrowed and read each of these wonderful stories from our public library and know that my students need to have access to them as well.
Developing and building a more diverse classroom library helps me reach each one of my students while fulfilling their academic needs and building cultural competencies.
Jason Reynolds is an author that students can easily relate to. His approachable writing style means reading isn't a chore. Instead, Reynolds turns reading into another form of breathing. If we scare young readers by assigning tough texts, then they will also be scared away from all books. I want to make reading enjoyable for all of my students, no matter their reading level or background, by getting the right books into my students' hands.
