Let's Build a Better Tomorrow: Inspiring Our Future Architects!
Help me give my students a wide variety of building materials and quality fiction and nonfiction texts that will support them as we explore architecture in our community and around the world.
Kindergarten students are amazing. They see wonder everywhere they look. Kindergartners are curious about everything and have a desire to play, touch, explore, and learn.
Our school is in a small town in Vermont.
We have approximately 400 students PreK-8. Our class is one of two kindergarten rooms and we have 17 students, aged five and six years old.
My students learn best through hands-on experiences and are most successful when they are able to gain knowledge in a playful, developmentally appropriate way.
My Project
The materials that I'm requesting will make a huge difference for my students. Young children love to build. They have a natural curiosity for how blocks fit together. They love to build tall towers and will often create structures that mimic the buildings they see around them. The nonfiction texts I'm requesting will allow us to explore an even greater variety of architectural features. These books will "bring" us to buildings around the world so we can experience architecture beyond what is found in our small community. This will make it possible to compare features and notice similarities and differences. The fiction texts I'm requesting will connect to the content while building student vocabulary and strengthening student understanding of story, characters, setting, and problems and solutions.
The most exciting part of this project is that students will then use the building materials to apply their new learning in a hands-on format!
The wooden planks will allow students to build their own designs, following the plans they've drawn on their wipe-off blueprint mats! The tape measures will give students experiences with length and width- taking their building to a whole new level!
The architecture set and the blueprints learning center will help students build spatial awareness as they try to copy designs that have already been created. These specific materials will help spark creativity for students who aren't sure where to begin- giving them an opportunity to engage with the content in a way that is comfortable for them. Soon, they will be taking risks and designing their own buildings too! Who knows, you may be helping a future architect discover his/her passion for designing and building and changing the world!
