Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We want to make world culture come alive for our students. I teach high school Spanish at a public school in Chicago. Part of our mission is to provide our students with educational opportunities that will help them to become informed and involved global citizens. As a World Language teacher this is my goal each and every day in my classroom. The school's International Club students and I have set as our goal to provided their fellow students with events and speakers that can share first hand their culture, knowledge and insight with our school.

As a school we strive to provide our students with an education that provides a world view. We have many lessons in the classroom that promote this goal. In addition we have many programs for students to travel abroad which provide an amazing opportunity for intercultural exchange. However the cost for these trips is enormous, and many of our students do not have the funds necessary to travel to another country. Walter Payton's International Club students are very aware of this obstacle and have set as their goal to bring the world to our school by hosting events, workshops, film screens and guest speakers to come and share with the students. Hopefully this sharing will lead to more intrinsic learning and desire to continue these cultural studies as the move from high school, to college and beyond.

The International Club has set as their motto "Discover the World, Discover Payton, Discover yourself". In order for their aspirations to become successful they need your help. The cost of sponsoring these events is quite large for a student group. For their first event they would like to sponsor a Flamenco dance group to come in and share with the students their music, dance, and culture. The group would preform and then teach a dance lesson to all the students. The students want the event to be open to all interested students.

Your help will help bring the world to my school. Allowing them to truly immerse themselves in another culture for a few hours, which will hopefully spark a lifelong desire to learn and share with the world around them.
