My Project
Fifth grade science is such an important year, as it is truly the foundation for a student's science understanding. My goal with this grant is to build on what we currently have access to. We currently have the ability to use the microscope in science class; however, we need more slides that reflect the human body systems. Along with this is the human body system puzzles to be completed in small groups to help see how all systems are interconnected. (The replacement lung piece is for a lung model we have used for approximately 3 years and over 200 students! They are always so amazed to see the cause and effect relationship of the diaphragm and lungs.) Lastly, the weather ball barometer will help develop on the abstract concept of air pressure as it is related to weather.
I truly love the way that my 5th Grade students introduce me to their parents, 'This is my weird science teacher!' (This is said with a grin exchanged between the student and myself.) The students truly enjoy the hands-on, real world learning we are able to experience in science; with these items we will be able to expand upon the material we currently have, to provide a deeper understanding of the science concepts.
