When students hear about reading a novel the first class that comes to mind is English. I believe there are some quality books for students to enjoy that could relate to current topics in both Economics and Civics classrooms.
While funding will limit how many books are in the classroom, I hope to incorporate excerpts of these novels to provide real-life examples of the curriculum I taught.
In Economics, many of the topics are lifelong issues. One of the topics is the scarcity of water in California. Another topic is healthcare and insurance in the United States. Finally, students have been exploring the cost of college in my classes, but having the guidance of a professional for college pricing would be a new benefit.
Additional books to build lessons off of will include "The Circuit" and "Reaching for the Stars: The Inspiring Story of a Migrant Farmworker Turned Astronaut." Both stories will allow students to gain a greater understanding of the migrant farmworker experience within the state of California and also show the opportunities that exist through hard work.
With some of these novels, we hope to create presentation boards where students can showcase what they have learned from the novels.
