This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students love to dance, play, and sing. Our students don’t have access to different mediums to express themselves musically. I would love to have these music items in our classroom.
Exposing children to music during early development helps them learn the sounds and meaning of words and helps them build their motor skills while dancing.
Music can give children a way to express themselves. If we fill our classroom with these instruments, students will have many new ways to unleash their creativity, to be inspired and uplifted, to relax, and to relieve stress and tension. Additionally, making music with their classmates can improve their social and emotional skills.
Our elementary school is in the South Bronx, and more than 90% of the students in our school qualify for free or reduced meals and many live in temporary housing. Many of my pre-kindergarten students are from many different parts of the world. Most of our class are English language learners.
What I love most about my class is their excitement to learn new things about the world around them, and what they can do in it. The look of excitement and wonder in their eyes when learning new things is one of pure joy and optimism in finding something new to learn in such a fun way.
