As each school year ends, we educators send our students off with bright hope. We hope that they will continue to read and keep the skills that they have worked so hard on all school year sharp over the summer. Many kids and families have good intentions, but it doesn't always happen. The “summer slide” is what often happens to disadvantaged children during the summer months. They barely stay afloat or even regress, while children in more affluent families continue to read and grow over the summer months.
Putting a brand new book in the hands of every student as they leave for the summer may help beat the "summer slide".
With this project, we hope to provide each student in our building with a brand new book that they can keep forever.
The general need of our population is to have books in the home for continual access. The community does not have a library or one nearby for students to get books from and other learning materials. Our area is rural and resources are few. Since transportation is a huge barrier to reading, we want to help families develop readers by helping them gain access to reading materials all year long in their own home. With your help, we can start building home libraries in EVERY student's home. As siblings grow, these books can be passed on to younger siblings or neighbors.
