My Project

I am extremely fortunate to teach STEM at a culturally diverse urban public elementary school in our nation's 3rd largest school district. We serve students in grades K-8, and our students' families reside in neighborhoods across our city.

"Let's Be the Change We Wish to See", inspired by the words of Gandhi, is a hands-on environmental stewardship STEM project that will put our students in the driver's seat of transforming our school's learning spaces both inside and outside of our building through various horticultural practices!

Like many kids growing up in today's world, our students have expressed their growing anxiety about the environmental impacts due to human-induced climate change.

First, our upper grades middle school students will collaborate with their younger primary grades buddies to assemble the 3 hydroponics growing towers, research how to maintain the systems with the aerogarden NPK fertilizer/plant food sets, and then begin growing the seedlings in multiple classrooms from the Ambgrow seed starter pods and numerous heirloom seed species requested for our project. The growing towers will be placed throughout our building's main hallways and serve as a reminder to our community that hydroponics is one solution to climate change that young people can spearhead by growing plants and produce year-round with only water and basic nutrients.

The next phase of our project includes partnering with a prominent local landscape architect and professor who happens to be an alumnus of our school, local botanists, university students, and our school's parents. Students will then plant native drought-resistant pollinator plant seedlings in the hydroponics towers, which they will then transplant outside to transform our school's outdoor learning spaces from bare grass to vibrant and thriving biodiverse prairie ecosystems. Ultimately, our students will engineer their own hydroponics and aquaponics systems to share with our greater community!
