My Students

I am delighted when my students make demands. This may surprise you, but I feel this way because it means they are gaining the skills to communicate their wants and needs. As a speech and language therapist in the public school system I work with pre-school aged children of all abilities. Our diverse community is made up of children from all backgrounds and many are in financial need.

Each of my students communicates in their own unique way.

It could be through a complete, grammatical, verbal sentence, or a single word to request, or by handing me a PECS icon, or tapping it out on a voice generating device, or by hitting a pre-recorded button. All of these methods could be considered a great accomplishment for them.

It can be a challenge to make speech therapy fun for children aged 3-5. At this age, students are visual and interactive learners. The most effective way to make progress is to do it through play, books, and games. I do my best to make all my sessions entertaining and positive so each student enjoys our time together while learning a life-long, essential skills.

My Project

For preschool students, books provide a world of wonder. At this age, learning is enhanced by visual stories and students enjoy connecting with characters. Classic characters like Clifford the Big Red Dog and Pete the Cat are familiar and exciting. For those students who struggle with their speech and language skills books are a great support and learning tool. Each book I have selected carefully lines up with the year-long preschool curriculum.

Entire speech and language therapy lessons are easily planned based on a single book.

Through stories we can work on vocabulary building, articulation accuracy, answering WH questions, sequencing, and so much more.
