This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I love that my kindergarten students are eager, curious, and motivated learners. Although school has not yet begun and I haven't met my new students as I write this, from my past experience, I know they will be just as I described them above.

It is important that my students see their classroom as their home away from home.

Many of the students I serve come from broken homes, live with multiple families, and sadly, some of my students may be homeless living in shelters. I want my students to feel welcome, safe, and to have a sense of belonging as well as ownership of their classroom.

Kindergarteners are special people. They have so much to learn and want to learn everything NOW! My kindergartners also have a lot to offer. They are happy, fun and sensitive children. They look out for each other as well their teacher. I feel privileged to be their teacher, I learn a lot from them.

My Project

It would be unreasonable to ask a five year old kindergartner to sit at a desk all day. In fact, my students sit at their desk for about forty percent of the day. The rest of the the day they are up and about or sitting on the rug. That is why I have chosen to ask for a classroom rug for my Donors Choose project.

A lot of fun learning takes place while the students are sitting on the rug It is important that we have a clean rug that is in good condition.

Students sit on the rug when I read stories to them, which is three or four times a day. They also work on math projects using manipulates on the rug. Often, students will ask to do their "seat" work on the rug with a clipboard instead of at their desk. Great building block structures are erected on the rug. And yes, the students do sometimes roll on the rug! That's what makes learning so much fun for them.

I would say the rug area is the nucleus of our classroom. It is where we do most of our learning and sit together as a whole. It is where we work as a team and build our learning community.
