Let me start off by saying that I truly have some amazing students that make my job all the more rewarding day in and day out. I am currently co-teaching (60 students) a group of socioeconomically diverse students. Many of the students come from single and/or broken families, families that are actively serving our military, families dealing with extreme poverty, as well as migrant families. Given the circumstances that each of the children in my class are faced with, it is my hope to make their days just a little brighter.
Kids needs choices...choices are around all of us each and everyday of our lives. Having flexible seating options in the classroom will allow students to take more ownership of their learning and also empower them to make good choices. For example, I have started using exercise balls and wobble chairs. The kids that need that little bit of extra "wiggle room" have that opportunity now to move and stay on task. With the requested stools, this will allow mobility around the room, furthering enhanced student engagement. Flexible seating in the classroom has truly given students an opportunity to work with their peers in the class, allowing them a unique perspective on not only their learning style, but the learning styles of those around them.
Most importantly, by providing flexible seating options that allow students to move about freely, they are freer to take academic risks creating stronger more creative students.
