Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I believe in creating a classroom environment where students of all different needs can feel comfortable. We have created a sense of family and community, but our environment isn't just about people. This also has to do with the activities and lessons I have for my students to foster their learning.
My students come from a variety of cultures and different home lives, but one thing that we all have in common is that our first language is Spanish.
My students are all coming from homes where their parents speak and sometimes can read in Spanish, but not in English. This makes my students' job at school vital. We are learning all of our new content in a language other than our native tongue. Pretty amazing right? These students are amazing; every single students comes into the classroom leaving their stressful personal lives at the door and they are eager to learn. I am focused on creating a sense of community and belonging in our classroom, but I respect that these little individuals also have specific needs and wants, which is where the portable CD players come in our classroom.
My Project
Each day we use the Daily 5 framework for our literacy block. This is a time where I can work with focus groups on any part of literacy that these students need further guidance. The rest of the class is working on rigorous writing, speaking, listening or reading activities. One of these activities is our listening center and it is our most beloved station! Another station is read to a partner, this station is extremely difficult for us because we are all at different reading levels and have different strategies that we need to work on. The portable CD players will allow for these independent students to work by themselves at one of the centers and be able to choose one book to focus on.
Our listening center now is all teacher based.
I choose the book, I choose the questions and the strategies that they use to listen and read the book with their group. The individual CD players will allow students to be accountable for their own learning. They will have the ability to make a personal choice to work independently and productively.
