My Students

Ben Franklin said, "Tell me...I forget. Teach me...I remember. Involve me...I learn." STEM/STEAM projects and challenges provide that hands-on involvement that students crave. 21st century skills taught through STEM/STEAM also help prepare students for their future careers and jobs. Even though Social Studies is not a STEM/STEAM subject, we do hands-on learning connecting science, technology, engineering, arts, and math to history on a regular basis because it's great for kids and helps them relate to real world problems. Our school is 50-65% free or reduced lunch, and studies show that STEM/STEAM is especially important to give those students opportunities to break the poverty cycle.

My middle school students are excited to share our classroom learning at the corporation community showcase, where kids of all ages and their families can try hands-on learning activities; it's a special chance for our entire rural community to connect in a positive, fun way with what's happening at our schools.

Getting parents and kids excited about 21st century skills like thinking creatively, having "grit" to persevere through difficulties, finding new solutions, and collaborating to learn together is the key to preparing students for a lifetime of learning. STEM/STEAM education pays off for the entire community.

My Project

Getting positive parental involvement can be a challenge, but our rural, high-poverty community has demonstrated a lot of interest in STEM/STEAM as an investment in the future of their children. My students in Social Studies 6 have found many ways to incorporate science, engineering, arts, math, and technology into our curriculum using Legos. We would like to share those activities with the public.

My students want to share examples of Lego projects and lead STEM/STEAM challenges at our annual community showcase, where all ages can learn and have fun together.

They are proud of their learning and want to show what they know to their families and friends. This will require more Legos than we currently have; right now, students have to dismantle their projects in order for the next class to have enough Legos to build their projects. They love STEM/STEAM challenges and are becoming skilled in teamwork; the next logical step is to let them teach others about STEM/STEAM using the Legos. My students want enough Legos to keep their classroom projects intact for display and still have enough Legos to be able to teach STEM/STEAM challenges to other kids as student leaders.
