My students need materials and centers to help them learn history and other Social Studies concepts.

My Students

Do you remember being seven years old and thinking that everyone over 16 was old? I do! Second graders have a difficult time placing the past in perspective. Unfortunately, my students do not have any social studies textbooks or other materials to help them with this task.

My students are an energetic group of second graders who thoroughly enjoy Social Studies.

They are completely aghast when they learn that Colonial families did not have indoor plumbing, grocery stores, or TV! My students are awestruck by history, but they have a difficult time relating to the concepts due to lack of resources and materials.

My Project

The Social Studies Teaching Centers will provide the background and materials necessary for my students to obtain a better grasp of Social Studies through an age-appropriate book and many hands-on activities for them to experience. The Reader’s Theater kits will provide my students with an opportunity to reenact scenes from history. “In a New World”: The Pilgrims arrive in America and learn to survive in the new land with the help of the Native Americans living there. They all celebrate the first Thanksgiving together. “It Happened on the Bus”: Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat to a white person, setting in motion the bus boycott that eventually changes the laws of segregation. “Leaves Can’t Talk!”: Sequoyah invents a writing system for the Cherokee people. The Independent Project Center will allow my students the opportunity to write about social studies topics; compare historical events to modern times; explore people and cultures; and demonstrate good citizenship.

My students’ perspective of history will be enhanced with these materials.

Through using these materials (Readers' Theater) my students will have an opportunity to experience some “historical moments.” They will be able to experience social studies instead of only reading or hearing about it.
