Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
True expression is the key to success. My students are in need of a place where they can tell their story and where they will be heard. Coming from neighborhoods with minimal opportunity, my students use the resources of the Talent/Art Class as a place to safely express themselves.
The majority of my students are English Language Learners and Special Needs students.
They are struggling financially and come from neighborhoods full of crime and gang activity. They are high school students and they are preparing themselves to enter the world as young adults. Our school is a safe zone, full of caring individuals who treat our student body as family. Unfortunately, due to a lack of funding, our ability to purchase materials has been cut tremendously. Many of my students would like to pursue higher education or obtain a career in a field relating to the arts. These materials would allow the students to improve their art-making techniques while expanding their portfolios.
My Project
Having light boxes in the classroom will allow students two practice art making techniques. They will be able to reference major works of art and use the light box to copy those techniques of art making while developing their own personal style. Many of my students love cartooning and the light box will allow them to create characters in a step by step process. Many of my students have desires to apply to major universities and schools. Good materials to create their artwork is crucial for a quality portfolio, in which colleges and jobs will look. Students also have more confidence and self-esteem when they know they are using and trusted with materials that will ensure their success.
These materials will have both an immediate impact as well as a long term impact.
The light boxes and markers will allow students this year to be independent, innovative and creative with their art making. These materials will last for years to come, ensuring that the students of future classes will have quality art materials to ensure success in their futures.
