My Students
My students are readers; however, they did not start out that way. I teach all levels of sophomores and a class of seniors. When I was able to implement the idea of choice reading, my students became true readers of books instead of fake reading their way through required novels. For twenty minutes each day, my students get to take a breath, take a break, and read a book. There are no assignments, no expectations, no paper, and no study guides. They just read.
My students are kind and honest and invested in their education.
But many of them are not able to find the time to read on their own. Many of my students tell me they haven't read a book of their own choosing ever. I decided that if I wanted my students to be readers, I needed to provide them contemporary and diverse books to read and the time to do so.
My Project
The document camera will allow me to show my students readily and easily how to annotate correctly, how to close read a text, how to take notes, how to pull specific details and quotes and how to connect and synthesize ideas.
A document camera will make teaching my students hands-on when I am using their own papers on the document camera so the entire class can help in the process.
A document camera will also allow my teaching to be more spontaneous and environmentally responsible. If I suddenly have an excerpt to compare with what we are doing, I can grab the book and show them! This will also cut down on the number of papers I need to photocopy on a daily basis.
