LET THEM PLAY: Our Goal to Get Instruments in All Hands
My students need mouthpieces because many have to share brass instruments and it is unsanitary for students to share mouthpieces as well.

My Students
My students love music and are eager to discover new music forms. However, it is very difficult for students to experience music together when they do not have all the materials needed to play and perform.
Our school has students of different economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
Therefore students bring all different experiences to the band classroom. Many of our students struggle however, to get instruments for band as well as the other materials: workbooks, mouthpieces, reeds, etc. Our band program surprisingly is still very successful and is respected by many of the high schools that we feed into. Though these students share instruments, mouthpieces, books, and other things; they view each other as family for the most part and the students push each other to not only be the best band in our area but also to be respectful musicians as any band should strive for!
My Project
Due to the fact that the majority of my students have to rent instruments from the school, we find it extremely difficult to be able to assign an instrument to just one student. Brass instruments are the most shared instruments and brass mouthpieces are the easiest in my opinion to transfer germs. Though we have Alcohol wipes to disinfect shared mouthpieces, having enough school-owned mouthpieces so that students would not have to share mouthpieces, would increase students level of playing because they could practice more and also decrease the risk of a student getting sick due to a shared mouthpiece.
This project of getting more mouthpieces for my band program is a project of safety as well as health so that I will not have students who share mouthpieces and have a great opportunity to take the school instrument home and practice to be the best student possible!
