Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Don't you love that feeling of making yourself comfortable, curling up with a good book, and reading? I want my students to have that feeling by making our library comfortable and inviting with a colorful rug and engaging seating!
I teach 5th grade in a high need, low income school which was restructured three years ago and is doing exceptionally well!
We recently became the first elementary school in our part of the state to exit Program Improvement 5! We also just found out in April that we were a 2010 California Distinguished School! In large part this is due to the use of proven teaching techniques that are effective for all learners but especially English language learners which make up 80% of our population of students. Our school is structured based on the belief that these students (and all students!) deserve a quality education and can achieve! And that they are truly doing! We just need support getting the materials we need to make learning engaging and effective for all students.
My Project
Our class needs a rug, a beanbag seat, and cushions for our library. Most of my students are not from homes where reading is a part of their lives or modeled by their families. It has been a struggle to motivate them to read, but they are starting to finally get excited about it! I want to reward and encourage this interest by enhancing the attractiveness of our library. Students will be able to come and comfortably read in a quiet space and enjoy their experience. I truly believe this will go a long way in continuing to motivate them to read and show them how enjoyable reading can be. The rug will also be used to refer to the geographic locations of places we are studying, so it will serve double duty!
You will make it possible for my students to solidify their love of reading and learning about the world.
My hope is that they will be inspired to continue to read throughout life by helping them see what a nice experience it is to read during free time! Your donation will directly impact these students and fuel their current (and hopefully lifelong) love for reading and learning!
