Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our fine arts magnet school is located in a vibrant and diverse community. Although we are in a high poverty district, our school has been able to retain our fine arts magnet status. However, it has been a challenge to find the funding for exciting, up-to-date learning materials that fit our 21st-century students.

One hundred percent of the students who attend our school receive free or reduced-price lunch.

We have a highly diverse immigrant population. As a choice school, students from many different backgrounds and countries attend our fine arts program. Our staff works hard to provide them with any materials they need to enhance their learning experiences.

My Project

Two years ago I read "The Book with No Pictures" to my class. It was an instant hit. One of my students told me that I should get a copy for all of them as it was so good. A DonorsChoose.org project was submitted that very day and later funded. My goodness the students were surprised and overjoyed when I opened the delivery box and handed each child their own personal copies. They then were given time to sign each other's books. Parents emailed me later to share how much they enjoyed their child reading the books to them (as that was the students' homework for that night!). Last year, I submitted another DonorsChoose.org project for a class set of these books. After the books arrived I read the story and thank goodness a student said he would love to own this book. This time I had the box of books next to me and surprised the students completely. Their cries of delight caused several passing staff members to peek in our doorway! This tradition must continue. Please help me bring the ultimate surprise to my beautiful students!
