Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I need simple and basic sewing machines for 4th and 5th grade students to create costumes for our whole school musical. This will be part of our props and costumes class.
I'm a second grade teacher at an arts integration elementary school.
I am also the coordinator for our after school performing arts department. Our entire school just performed Disney's Jungle Book Musical. This coming year we will perform Aladdin. I would like to add a props and costumes class to our program for non-performers to be involved in the musicals. Being able to create our own costumes fits right in with our arts integration model.
My Project
Older students in our school will be given an opportunity to take our props and costumes. This class will be directly connected to the whole school musical which takes place each year. Students can design and sew costumes for all the cast. (Currently, we have parents doing this). Learning to use sewing machines will allow them to create their own designs, and give them personal confidence to participate in future shows.
To be able to create your own costume designs will save our school money, teach students a life skill (sewing), promote creativity, and encourage students to get involved in all aspects of producing a school musical.
