My Students
Our students are fun, full-of-life, and never cease to amaze me. So many of them are eager to learn as well as teach others.
Our kids love to help!
Whether it be passing out papers, carrying boxes, or making sure the chairs are pushed in, they volunteer to help.
While they do enjoy helping others, they could use a little help of their own. For some of our families, the choice between gas for the car, food for dinner, or paying the bills, is one that has to be made.
We are in a low-income, high poverty school district. We have over 400 4th and 5th grade students in our school. 63% of those students receive free lunches and 40 of those students receive Backpack Buddies (food to take home for the weekend).
My Project
Calming. Inviting. Relaxing. These three words are what I want our sensory room to encapsulate for our students who are dealing with stress, anxiety, and trauma. Our students need a place where they can go to reset before continuing with the day. I want to create a place for them that feels safe. Somewhere they can go to practice using their social-emotional skills and practice mindfulness. Every student is an individual and I want a room that can meet a variety of needs. Some students love having a stress ball or a popper in hand while working through their feelings. Other students would rather close their eyes and focus on taking slow, deep breaths. I've worked with several students who prefer to sit still and focus on what they can see around them.
A sensory room is what we need to create these various environments to promote healing.
For the tactile students, I want to provide them with fidget poppers, stress balls, and magnetic building sets. The essential oils aroma diffuser will be used with students who respond best to focused breathing to help them regulate slowly breathing in and out. The aroma diffuser also has a sound option which will provide great background noise in those quiet moments...as we are currently able to hear EVERYTHING happening in the faculty bathroom that shares a wall with the sensory room. The light projector will be used as an alternative to the florescent lighting in the room in order to create a space that feels safer and less exposed.
