This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.”
-Margaret Mead
We learn how to think, observe and analyze history.
Our school is a Title I school in East New York, Brooklyn.
We are a very diverse learning community with English Language Learners from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic as well as students from Guyana and other parts of Central and South America. I am also fortunate to be teaching in an ICT class or Co-Teaching class with students who have special needs. Our students have a love of learning and discovering new things. They are highly motivated and love to experience new things. A visit from the New York Historical Society would be an amazing new experience.
My Project
The New York Historical Society is one of the oldest museums in the United States! It houses amazing historical documents with a concentration in American history. All four classes that I teach will be visited by a docent from the museum twice. They will bring the New York Historical Society with them to our classroom!
We will learn about the Underground Railroad and Westward Expansion by using materials from the museum's collection. The students will be able to discover and analyze history right at their own desks and from the comfort of their own classroom! Imagine a museum coming right to you, art and all, with your own private tour guide. That will be the experience we will have in our classroom.
It is not always possible to take all of our classes on trips, but with this amazing program and your donation to this project, all of our students will be able to experience a museum visit.
They will be able to have a private tour guide and interact with the museum's collection. This experience will motivate students to look at history in a new way and will allow them the opportunity to interact with the past.

The New York Historical Society
(The New York Historical Society will send a docent from the museum to work with all four of my classes twice. The docent will use the museums vast collection in our classroom to teach the students about The Underground Railroad and Westward Expansion. The students will be able to participate in a variety of activities that incorporate the museums collection and that brings history alive through the materials used. )
