This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a music teacher working with Kindergarten through 5th grade students within both the inclusion and self contained settings. Our school is fortunately surrounded by beautiful subtropical pine rock forest. Florida's weather and landscape provide the perfect climate and environment for these precious members of our ecosystem to come all the way to our school and visit us. We need birdsong recordings, flash cards, microphones, bird food, plush animals, and stands for this assignment. We will be studying our local birds and their bird calls in our project centered on listening to music and the world around us.

Without birds, where would we have learned that there can be song in the heart?

We have noticed that our school is almost like a haven for these birds and that they feel safe to sing and eat around our windows all hours of the day. We have engaged in a variety of birdwatching activities in our school that have made our love for conservationism truly blossom. This year we spotted a Florida Scrub Jay for the first time. I explained to them that this bird is the only species of birds that lives exclusively in Florida, and on top of that is an endangered species. I stressed to them how significant and rare the experience was, and how fortunate we are to be looking, watching, and supporting our local ecosystems. They now understand the importance of the nature around them and appreciate their local environment so much more. The children worry about the birds during storms and think about them gliding effortlessly on the breeziest of days. My love of birdwatching has overlapped with my love of music and identifying sounds and now my students are just as interested in supporting them as well as identifying them visually and aurally. Thank you for generosity!
