This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first graders are typical six and seven year olds. They love school and they love to play. They are full of energy and there is never a dull moment in my classroom! They are curious, great friends to each other and are always willing to help me or other first grade teachers when asked.

There is never a day that goes by that I don't ask myself if I have given them adequate time to be "children!" Do I let them interact with each other enough?

Do they get down time to relax and enjoy each other fully? Am I meeting their social, emotional psychological needs when I push rigor to meet standards?

I think it's time to stand back and explore ways to include play in the day to let them be kids!

My Project

Students are Kids and they LOVE LEGOs! Studies show that kids need to have interactive play with their fellow students. I want to use LEGOs, which both boys and girls love, to allow them down time during our regular and very busy academic day!

In my classroom I have a few tubs of LEGOs and I have found they are the most popular activity when there is choice time!

Kids play incredibly well and create amazing structures with the LEGOs. I just need more! The goal is to have a daily center filled with LEGOs where kids can play and interact with each other.
