Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom of 3, 4, and 5 year old deaf and hard of hearing students love to communicate at school and want to communicate at home as well. My class is in an all early childhood special education building. We focus on the needs of preschool students and I have the only class of deaf and hard of hearing students in the building.
My students communicate via sign language and their individual speech capabilities. They are fluent in sign and love to talk to each other and their teachers at school. They are a happy, loving bunch and love to communicate their needs, thoughts, and ideas. However, many family members are in the process of learning sign language and it is difficult for the students to communicate ideas between home and school. I want to help them bridge this gap.
I need a digital video camera and tapes to record my students participating in daily activities. I will be able to record them at circle time, during centers, on the playground, and any other time during the day. Then I will create DVDs for each student to share with his/her family to help bridge the gap between home and school. My students families will get a glimpse of what happens during their child's day. In addition, I will use the camera to create a sign language video to pass out to my students' families with all of the words we learn in various theme units. This will also help bridge the gap as the families can learn all of the vocabulary I am teaching to their child.
Your help will ensure that my students are able to communicate with all of the important people in their lives. My deaf and hard of hearing preschoolers are just like any other preschoolers, they just need a little more help to communicate. My students, their families, and I are very grateful for this support.
