Hello friend! I am a first year teacher starting out with a full-day kindergarten classroom in an urban high-need school in Illinois. I have lived in the area my whole life and am grateful for the opportunity to share my time with these kids. I have 20 wonderfully energetic kids with 20 beautifully different personalities.
I was hired the Friday before school started and was given a large and very empty room. I have been slowly building up our classroom's resources, but I am still lacking supplies that I believe are intrinsic to kindergarten learning. A critical part of the kindergarten experience is learning to be in school and it is so important to make the learning exciting, not rigorous and stressful.
My students need board games to make learning math, science, reading and social studies hands-on fun, while gaining social and emotional experiences by promoting taking turns and following rules! This is the time in school when students cultivate a love of learning as well as build valuable socializing skills. Board games are such a beneficial learning tool. They promote problem solving, identifying patterns, quick thinking, anticipation skills, vocabulary skills, math skills, self-esteem building, risk-taking, persistence, deduction, memory, team work, and decision making, just to name a few.
Remember back when you were young, how much fun pulling out a board game could be? I know how happy and excited my kids would be to have games in the classroom, especially since some of them don't have games at home! Your help would not only enrich their learning, but give them confidence, build up their skills, and most importantly, make happy kindergarten memories.
