Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach second grade at a small, early-childhood school in the Bronx. Nearly all of my students receive free lunch. One of my primary goals as a second-grade teacher is to make sure that each of my students is a successful reader, and that all of them learn to love reading. The most important factor in determining whether or not students become successful readers is how much time they spend actually reading and interacting with good books. While I provide these opportunities constantly throughout the day, my students also need to read at home. In fact, one of my daily homework assignments is that all of my students read with their families for thirty minutes each night. Since many of my students have few, if any, books to read at home, I have a lending library in my classroom from which my students can borrow books to read at home and return to school the following day. However, my lending library is quite limited. I have a beautiful classroom library, but my principal worries about the school's books being lost and does not allow the students to take them home. I have bought some books myself for the students to read, but all of my students have read all of the thirty books I have in the lending library multiple times, and they are beginning to lose interest in them. In order to motivate my students to keep reading, I would like a lending library full of exciting new books, on a variety of reading levels, for my students to borrow. With a wide range of exciting books for my students to choose from, they will be able to continue reading enthusiastically all year long.
