My Students

I am a Library Media Specialist servicing Alum Creek Elementary, a Title I. school. The majority of our students come from low SES backgrounds, and they need lots of encouragement in using language. Therefore, I have worked to improve our facilities for the past 15 years by encouraging students to read, read, read! Also, I teach writing skills as well. I love my students so much, and I really go out of my way to make annual improvements for their experiences in the library. Even though our students do not have a lot of luxuries, it doesn't not stop them from being kind, considerate and caring. They appreciate what is given to them, and they recognize the teachers efforts in creating an inviting and homey feel to our classrooms. I understand where they are coming from, for I was literally a former at-risk student myself. I understand how they feel, and I what they are going through (especially with the lack of support at home). Our kids are so sweet, and I love them too much!

My Project

I really have worked hard to build a super collection of books. Now I need an inviting space to persuade the kids to pick up the books and enjoy the wonders of reading. Our community is quite rural, and access to a public library is difficult for many; therefore, for the majority of the school, my school library is their only source. I need to make it as inviting as possible! Reading can be a wonderful ESCAPE from their home lives, can open doors to unknown worlds, and connect themselves to the big wide world that is out there for them to explore!
