Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“What is that Ms. F?” "Oh look! It made a cocoon!" "Is it a butterfly now?" These are just some of the many questions and statements I have been hearing for the past 4 years whenever I bring a new set of caterpillars to the classroom.
I currently teach 20 motivated English Language Learners in a low-income school in the city of Los Angeles. Although their limited English makes them different from a lot of students, they are just as curious as any child and are always eager to learn new things, especially if it's hands-on.
Although the state standards require that we teach subjects such as science, our time constraints sometimes limit us to the amount of material we get to expose them to. In the previous years, I have been able to purchase one set of larvae for the whole class, but with limited time, it is always difficult for the students to observe the changes on a daily basis. Although my students are always eager to see the caterpillar wiggle or just observe a chrysalis hanging in the net, they are often times limited to a quick glance right before recess. Many times the specimens end up in a corner of the room and next thing you know the butterflies have emerged. Although the students get excited to see the butterfly, they really miss out on observing the whole cycle taking place.
With your donation, I will be able to provide each pair of students with their own set of larvae to have at their desks. This will allow them to practice observation skills, record their information on a daily basis, and learn scientific vocabulary. The life cycle poster will reinforce the vocabulary and provide them with a reference to further understand the cycle. I am positive that having access to the specimens daily will make their learning experience much more meaningful and exciting rather than just reading it in a book or completing a worksheet.
