My students live in a low economic status area. Many of my students crave love and attention at school. My classroom offers them consistency, safety, love, and compassion. Many of the students in my classroom do not have access to books at home.
Despite all of their hardships my students come to school every day ready to learn.
They love being read to at school. Books allow my students to see where stories can take them. Students have new experiences by listening and reading books in my classroom.
My Project
I want all of my students to be fluent readers by the end of the school year. However, the biggest challenge getting them there is the lack of books available to them in my classroom.
I am constantly trying to make reading instruction fun, engaging, and meaningful.
I want my students to enjoy reading as much as I do. These leveled books would entice my students to learn to love reading. Additionally, it will help them to become confident, independent readers. My students need a leveled books classroom library to use during independent reading time. A majority of my students do not have access to books at home that meet their reading levels. Students would use these books during partner reading and independent reading time to predict, make connections, and retell stories. They would be able to have meaningful conversations such as how characters are feeling, things they notice, and how the book makes them feel.
My students' love for reading will grow tremendously. Students in my classroom will leave first grade with a firm foundation. This foundation will set them up for success in the future.
