This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are amazing children who are motivated to do well in all subject areas. They attend the oldest school in California and are happy, carefree second graders from diverse socio-economical and cultural backgrounds. Most of my students receive free lunch and are often limited in getting their own school supplies. One thing my students have in common is their love of reading. Nothing lights up their eyes more than when I add a new book to our classroom library!
These incredible second graders love to learn especially through reading.
There is nothing like reading a book that is at a student's level so that he/she can get lost in a fictional story or the knowledge that is gained through a well-written informational text; to this, I declare, Let My Students Read!
My Project
With your thoughtful donation, my students will have the materials they need for Readers Workshop as part of the Balanced Literacy approach our school is in the midst of implementing. This invigorating methodology created by Lucy Calkins inspires children to see themselves as readers at every level. Leveled book boxes will help them to choose books that are just right for them to read independently. They will be given the opportunity to search for books organized by themes like mystery, non-fiction, and sports, neatly displayed in mobile book carts. Furthermore, having their own bins to store their books, allows for ownership of their own literacy learning supplies; this component is necessary to teach these young people the importance of responsibility.
Independent Reading may be only one component of the Balanced Literacy approach, but a crucial one!
My students know the value of reading. Yet, to no fault of their own, they do not have the proper books and materials to learn and practice literacy skills like their peers in more affluent schools. With your help, they will become the readers they are meant to be and have a brighter future because of it.
