We need a 3D printer that actually works and will print their designs in class so they can see this technology of the future and make objects from their 2D designs.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want at the end of the school year each student to have one of their designs come to life with a 3d printer. We have the program on the computer for students to make designs to be 3D printed. There isn't a student that isn't interested in this new art technology. To have this experience is my goal.
We have a 3D printer that does not work more than it works and the line of projects waiting to print is very long. This group of students are very interested in 3D printing and want to have the chance to print their designs before school is out. Having another 3D printer that works will give them this chance. They did research on the best 3D printer and the easiest to use that was in their price range. I pointed them where to look and to read the reviews. These 4 students collaborated and talked and made compromises about which printer to finally request. The bottom line was it had to work and was user friendly.
They have started making new designs to be printed.
Teamwork on deciding which 3D printer to request, compromising if what they wanted was too much or if someone disagreed with the group choice: is a real-life problem solving experience for them. This is collaboration: "You can't always get what you want" -Rolling Stones-
Each of the 4 students had to do research on the best 3D printer within a price range and knowing if it was too expensive, it was less likely to get funded. They had to find a printer that was reasonably priced and would produce a good print easily. Each student needed to convince students in the table group their top pick and they came to a decision that they all agreed was the best.
In Their Own Words
We wanted to get a 3D printer for the class that works and we can watch it print. We have designed what we want to print already and we are eager to print our designs. This class is the only one that is doing 3D printing at our school. We have learned Tinkercad and have tried Sketchup maker. I hope to print my 3D drawing sometime this year so I can see my drawing turn into an actual thing.
My table group will show other students how to make drawings to be printed in the 3D printer. We will tell them how they can write projects to be funded through Donors Choose. We can show them how to use Tinker-cad and put the drawing on a SD card.
If we get the 3D printer then we can watch over it and make sure no one touches it and that it is used correctly. I will be happy to show my friends what I designed and printed once we get the 3D printer hopefully.
Getting a 3D printer that works, and works well each time a drawing is submitted is important to my school to learn about this really exciting, new technology that we never had before. I've read about it but to have it in the classroom is exciting and to be able to watch it print and have something is great too.
The problem or challenge this project will solve is having a 3D printer that will print everyone's project. The challenge is to draw something different to make 3D.
