Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach ELA to a diverse group of students at my arts-infused school. At my school, students have many opportunities to express themselves and learn through instrumental music, drama, dance, vocal music, art, and so much more. It is my goal to motivate my students and make learning exciting for every child.

My students are creative, passionate, and hardworking, but have unique and individual needs.

Over 90% of students at my school come from low-income households, and the entire school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. There is also a large population of English Language Learners at my school. The students in my class have a wide range of abilities and it is my job to meet the varied needs. I develop art-infused, technology-integrated, and action-based lessons to help create engaging lessons for my students.

My Project

Reading is an important part of becoming a successful learner. I need a classroom carpet for students to sit on when I read aloud to them. When students sit on the carpet, they are able to eliminate distractions that may occur at their seat and turn their sole attention to the reading instruction. By having a classroom carpet available for students, I can offer flexible seating as well as small group instruction. It creates an additional space that is designated for learning.

I believe it is important for students to have their own copy or a text to read and enjoy during class shared reading.

I try to integrate Social Studies into literature as much as possible. We will be completing a novel study during the year in which will read an amazing novel by Karen Hesse called Letters from Rifka. This book is about a young Russian peasant that has to escape persecution during WWI. She encounters many hardships along the way but learns the important lesson of courage. This has been a student favorite every year I have used it, so I want my students to be able to have a copy that they can read and enjoy during the unit.
