Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are the storytellers of tomorrow! We are a bubbly Kindergarten class, full of eagerness to learn and a love for literature! We are located in a low income community in Southern California with a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds.

The study of literature is a very important skill in Kindergarten.

Stories are usually introduced to the children using books. However, last week I read a story using a puppet instead of the book. The reactions of the class were amazing! These children showed an excitement with this storytelling method and were eager to come up and retell the story themselves, using the puppet. I went home that night realizing this method of storytelling must be used more!

My Project

The solution is this: Our classroom would benefit with having a storytelling board with cloth characters and props that stick to the surface. This would give the children the opportunity to be introduced to new literature in a new and exciting way as well as give the children an opportunity to retell the stories using the figures. The use of these materials would help the students develop an understanding of book awareness skills such as identifying the setting, characters and sequence of events in a story.

Your donation would give these children the opportunity to see outstanding literature "put to life" in the classroom.

They would become storytellers themselves and reenact what we having read. The use of these supplies would serve as an excellent teaching aid in the many Language Arts skills these students must master in Kindergarten! A storytelling center would be a beneficial and exciting addition to our classroom.
