My students need lots of practice with oral English language expression. These story telling props will allow them to practice retelling favorite and familiar stories.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Be kinder than necessary, everyone is fighting some sort of battle. Many of my students face unseen battles, from poverty to family issues to parental illiteracy, just to mention a few. I want to provide the kind, safe place for them to begin to develop their full potential.
My school is an AWESOME Title 1 school, making great strides in public education despite a challenging population.
Most of my students are on free/reduced lunch and families are supported by Communities in Schools social worker and services. We also have a very large refugee population from Myanmar (formerly Burma) This year, over half of my class are second language learners. My students are a JOY to teach every day, eager to learn, full of excitement.
My Project
I'm hoping to acquire several story telling kits , to use for introducing favorite children's literature, then moving them to a center/station for extended 'play'. Often students just learning English are reluctant to speak but will 'retell' familiar stories. As a veteran teacher and member of ATPE, I know value of supplemental materials, above and beyond those provided through state curriculum. This is especially important for students who don't always have lots of resources in their homes.
Providing these story telling kits will allow my shy and/or reluctant to speak students a safe and fun way to practice their English.
They will be able to share the stories with friends at school and parents though video.
