Hi! My name is Lisa and I am an Intensive Special Education teacher. I began teaching this unique, amazing population almost 10 years ago. I honestly couldn't imagine doing anything else. My students are medically fragile and non verbal. Several of my students are also wheelchair bound and require additional positioning support throughout the day. My students require personalized support to access the curriculum. I encourage and support my students to be as independent as possible and I value the relationships I've built with my students families. I am honored to have the opportunity to do what I do.
Each of my students have their own personalities, likes and dislikes, strengths, and struggles.
Anyone who spends time with my students cannot help but see how special they truly are. As they get to know my students they too see each child’s abilities rather than their disabilities. They see the joy and happiness my students have for life despite the medical, physical, and cognitive struggles that most of us will never contend with.
It is my goal to provide my student with appropriate tools and materials to support them in accessing the curriculum to the best of their ability.
My Project
As you can imagine adapting, modifying and providing appropriate curriculum and materials for my students can get quite expensive. I have always considered these expenses my responsibility. I recently reached out to others within my district who incorporated amazing pieces of technology in their classrooms, particularly interactive whiteboards. This technology will allow all of students to access the material with ease. It will allow me to project computer activities and needed visuals large and full of color! I currently gather the students around my desktop computer. Although I am thankful that my classroom has a computer, it is not the most ideal means to present visual information to my visually impaired students. It is also challenging to include the students with seizure disorders within the "computer crowd". These students need to remain easily accessible to the classroom nurses. Unfortunately the students with seizure disorders never get a front row seat at the computer during group time. I would like to change this!
