Let Me Be Brave in the Attempt!

Help me give my students three regulation bocce ball sets so that they can compete, for the first time ever in our school system, in a Special Olympics bocce ball tournament.

My Students

Our students are challenged by developmental disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder, Down Syndrome, and various medical syndromes. They are typical middle school students in that they want what all students of this age want: true reciprocal relationships, to be meaningfully included in mainstream life, and to prepare for a good quality of life as adults.

While they do face daily and lifelong challenges that most of us would not want to bear, they still show their "I can do it" spirits when they say, "Let me win; but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."

My Project

Our students do not shy away from a challenge! Whether it's academic, social, or athletic, they are always willing to try! New experiences help them to develop confidence in themselves and gives them needed skills they'll use to live independent lives. By having three regulation bocce ball sets, our students can practice a skill that they could use to find a way to interact with typically developing students in our school. Also, by having three sets, we can host an area wide bocce ball tournament for the Special Olympics organization.

In this world where being socially savvy not only helps you make friends, good social interactions can help to build confidence and a sense of belonging.

Athletic and leisure skills can be a doorway to building reciprocal relationships and living more independently for people with developmental disabilities.
