Let It Grow

Help me give my students gardening beds to learn about plants and how to grow food! One of these beds is raised for our students who are in wheelchairs to allow for easier access.

My Project

My students are inquisitive and love the outdoors. All of my students have significant cognitive disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, and varying intellectual disabilities. My students do not often get the chance to access community activities such as tending to and running a school garden.

Research has shown that gardening has many benefits for children.

Gardening provides an immersive learning experience across all subjects. Students are able to learn about plant and insect lifecycles, watching first hand. Students also utilize reading and math skills, from reading seed packets to measuring the distance between seeds to ensure proper growth.

Additionally, gardening provides the opportunity for the development of fine motor skills. Many of my students have goals on their IEPs for this. By using gardening tools, planting, and handling seeds, they are allowed to work on these goals in a meaningful way. School occupational therapists could even incorporate this into their therapy services for kids.

Not only does gardening provide academic learning experiences and the development of fine motor skills, but it also allows for sensory exploration. The majority of my students have sensory needs and many of them explore their tactile needs through digging in the dirt or sand. By gardening, these needs would be met. Additionally smelling the plants, feeling and watching the water, and feeling the texture of different plants are also sensory exploration activities.

Gardening also provides benefits for social emotional health and responsibility. Being responsible for living things like plants provides a concrete example of what happens when you are not responsible. Students will see why upholding responsibilities are important for themselves and others. At the same time, encountering disappointment allows for practicing self regulation skills, and gardening, in turn, is a self regulatory tool.
