This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach biology and environmental science in an urban high school in the financially strapped school district of Philadelphia. It is a creative and performing arts high school with about 510 students. My students face many difficult challenges living in a low income /high poverty area but have they have the determination to strive for success. Our students have a lot of school pride and are always willing to help out each other when needed. I consider our school to be the "diamond in the rough."

My Project

I would like to expose my Biology students to a diverse group of organisms in our classroom. All my students live in the inner city and most have never traveled out of their own neighborhoods. They will get to observe tadpoles turn into frogs, make compost with worms for our garden, create a terranium, watch ants make tunnels, make a clock run on mud, grow albino corn ..... There are so many fantastic labs included in this project and so many different ways for my students to observe, measure and graph their results that the possibilities are endless in class or online
