Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are kindergarten-second grade students (5-8 years-old) in a special education classroom in New York. All of my students have very specific learning and emotional needs which requires additional support in school. They are enthusiastic, silly, loving, and challenging.
My Project
Over the summer, I spent time sorting out individual Lego sets for my class based on the students I assumed would be on my roster for this upcoming school year. I used my own Legos from my childhood to give each student a small amount to play with in the classroom in a separate container they could take to their desk.
However, at the beginning of this school year, my class size doubled and I now do not have enough Legos to go around.
I am looking for donations to increase my Lego supply so I can now give individual Lego kits to each student. Legos, besides being incredibly fun (as I'm sure you remember) and a great source of creativity, are excellent tools for helping children learn mathematical thinking and engineering skills.
In the classroom, students will use the Legos as part of incentive activities and daily classroom routines. Each student will be given an individual tub since presently they are not able to share due to Covid-19 restrictions in the classroom. Students will also use instructions to build objects and patterns and work on problem solving and puzzle skills.
