Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a high poverty elementary school with close to 800 students that is located in a neighborhood that is settled in the middle of an industrial area. Aside from all of the trucks that rumble by, there is a high rate of crime in the surrounding area. All of the students receive a free lunch because of their socio-economic status. My students are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom. They all are English Language Learners and many of them have learning disabilities. Despite the many challenges they face, they are always ready to learn, especially if I provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Seeing the excitement in kids' eyes when they learn something new makes teaching the best job ever.
My students need as many hands-on experiences as possible in school, to enhance and reinforce their learning.
My Project
My students love building and creating, and every day there seems to be less time to do that in school. These LEGO sets will give them all an opportunity to explore and create whatever it is they picture. These sets will supplement the few we have in class, giving everyone more of an opportunity to play and create. Giving students an opportunity to learn through play is essential to their growth. Playing with LEGO sets not only builds their academic skills, but it feeds their social awareness as well. Playing cooperatively now will teach them to work well in cooperative groups as they continue their education.
